Purpose & Process
The United States Power Squadron vessel Safety Check is a free courtesy check of a vessel's safety equipment for
compliance with federal, state, and local safety requirements. This is the same inspection as that given by the
Coast Guard Auxiliary.
The results are not reported to any law enforcement agency.
Our Basic Safe Boating Course fulfills North Carolina boat licensing law and is taught by many experienced
volunteers who have a tremendous amount of on the water personal experience.
Some of the items checked are:
• Proper display of numbers
• Visual Distress Signals (Flares)
• Fire Extinguishers
• Ventilation (engine compartment/bilge)
• Sound producing device
• Navigation Lights
When boaters pass the Safety Check they will be issued a decal to be displayed on their boat showing that they
have meet all safety requirements. Should your vessel not meet all requirements you will know what is needed to
meet the requirements and have a decal issued.
